My Gear

This Page has information on my photographic equiment.

I started of with Canon EOS300D SLR camera with an EF-S18-55mmf3.5-5.6 lens, to which I added an EF75-300mm F4.0-5.6 III USM.I have found the EF75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III USM to a good lens but limited at full zoom. You need a tripod or hide clamp to stop camera shake, this is not a problem in hide but if your out and about you don’t have time to use a tripod , you want your camera ready for that flushed rabbit or startled deer.

I now use a canon 20D body with Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS. Lens. This lens is a great to use on the move as it is not to Bulky and light, so can be carried all day. Image stabilizing (IS) helps to eliminate camera shake when using the lens without a tripod.
For hide work I use my old Canon EOS 300D Body with a Sigma 500mm APO f4.5 DX USM lens. I have fitted a double battery grip. This gives me a longer battery live so the camera can be left switched on ready for use. I use a remote shutter release to help to stop camera shake as this lens does not have IS. With this lens I use a Canon 2x extender which gives me a lens of 1000mm but at a price this knocks the f value down by 2 stops, And Canon 1.4x Extender which gives me a 700mm at f5.6. Both extenders also fit the 70-200mm lens and still maintain both auto focus and image stabilizing, when fitted.
I use a Manfrotto 190 Pro tripod with a 486RC2 Compact Ball Head; this also fits a Manfrotto hide clamp which clamps to most hide benches which gives you a good solid platform. I also carry a bean bag, this will sit on a car roof or gate rail to give supports to any camera.

IN THE BAG
Canon 220 sparks lite flash.
Canon off shoe cable and side mount
Cleaning gear: cleaning cloth, brush blower and cleaning pen.
Spare tripod plate.
Water proof cover for camera and lens.
2 x spare battery packs.
Extra memory cards.
Remote shutter cable( 1 for each camera )
Lens filters.
View finder extension.
Note book & Pen (keeping notes of date, time, and weather ECT.).
Multi tool.
A small torch (hides are dark if you drop something it’s easy to find).

Memory Cards
I use 1 gig Compact flash cards for 3 reasons.
First reason:
If you loss a larger memory card you my loss a days work, but if you
loss a 1 gig card you still have the others.
Second reason:
Price, you can build up your cards as you can afford them.
Third reason:
If a card gets damaged you replace 1 card only, and do not loss
all your work.

Clothing
I have a lot of walking and climbing gear which has proven its self many times over the years. The only draw back is most of it is brightly coloured so I use a Advantage camouflage net suit over the top which is light weight and cool in the summer. Along with good walking boots, a fleece hat or peck cap and gloves all help to keep me warm and comfy in all conditions. As well as helping me to blend in with my surroundings.
